It is with immense sadness that we have to announce that Justin Smith died on March 3rd 2014. A personal tragedy for his loved ones, and an incalculable loss for the world of ecology.
We are setting up a fund in Justin's memory, with the support of Avon Wildlife Trust, to raise funds for training apprentice ecologists. Just Giving - Remembering Justin Smith
Justin Smith, BSc(Hons) MIEEM, was Bristol Fungi's expert ecologist. Justin studied fungi for over 25 years, published various papers on mycological subjects, and led innumerable fungus forays. He undertook extensive fungus surveys in the UK, Macaronesia, Germany, Chile and Argentina, and worked with Bristol University to create a systematic method of fungus recording by mapping.
Justin also studied and undertook surveys for lichens and bryophytes for over 10 years in sites around the UK. He delivered many identification courses in fungi, lichens, bryophytes, ferns, trees, ancient woodland, and grassland ecology for organisations such as Bristol University, IEEM, Somerset Environmental Records Centre, and local Wildlife Trusts.
Justin was a member of the British Mycological Society, British Lichen Society, and British Bryological Society, and he helped manage the North Somerset Fungus Recording Group.
Justin was well-loved and respected in the ecological community and beyond, and will be sorely missed.
